There were several publications beginning in 2003 predicting potential issues with corona viruses after the discovery of the SARS virus. They were not directly ignored, but no one paid enough attention to the warnings to do much if anything about them. The pandemic was the result; and it portends for more serious problems with other viral diseases in the future.
